Building off of an earlier class, this project was a four-week exploration into interior space design and floor planning. The branding and concept was vital for us to stay focused on what we wanted our end result to be. This concept was a retro-modern space inspired by swing dancing and 50s diners.
For clarifying this vision, we pulled together various elements from the team members to create a conceptual image that inspired the rest of the project. The black and white photo is Sarah Smisek's grandparents!
This image brings together the freshness of the farm-to-table menu, the live music, and the retro-modern feeling.
A key concept for this project is the interaction of different age groups, and balancing the many different uses for the space. Creating two complementary mood boards helped us to discern how these two pieces would fit together, as well as the feeling we wanted guests to have in the space.
With that in mind, we developed our floor plan, color coded by the areas we designed.
A key aspect of developing this concept was branding appropriately for the age groups we were targeting. The menu we designed incorporates traditional diner menu items and branding we developed.
The dining tables were designed with tabletop games in mind. The senior center is a space where the locals would gather to play games and enjoy spending time together. The tables have an added shelf under the tabletop to store games between use.
A supporting design was the milkshake bar and machine. I modeled these elements in SolidWorks. Taking inspiration from luxurious materials like velvet, gold, and marble, this milkshake bar gives a level of richness and elegance to the dancing space.
